AMT's Additive Focus
AMT’s Manufacturing Technology department has grown to reflect the expanding technologies used in manufacturing today. The goal of the department is to provide insight into technologies that are being investigated or requested by end users relative to manufacturing technology. This will include monitoring global research relative to manufacturing. The department will also work with government entities to further understand their needs and focuses. Additive technology is a major focus, supported by a new staff member, Tim Shinbara, AMT’s Technical Director.
Shinbara has a background working in manufacturing technology R&D in the aerospace and defense industries, involvement in government contractual R&D to support programs for the F/A-18, F-35, GlobalHawk and others. He developed technologies in additive manufacturing and related to high-temperature polymer materials and processes for the F-35 and also transitioned auto identification manufacturing supply chain elements – such as RFID and RTLS – into manufacturing production facilities.
Shinbara’s chief role will be researching, compiling, and disseminating trends in manufacturing technologies to AMT member companies, with a focus on additive technologies. To start, he has been active in the creation of a pilot Institute on Additive Manufacturing, as well as the recently announced National Network for Manufacturing Innovation. He is also the staff liaison to the newly formed Additive Manufacturing Group which is made up of AMT members involved in building and selling additive equipment and materials and works toward creating greater visibility for the products of its membership and increased usage of the technology by manufacturing customers. Tim is also leading the development of MTAdditive.com, an AMT-sponsored website that contains the latest information, technical and topical, on the additive industry, with the goal of creating an objective, unbiased home for the entire additive community.
